About SAMMO

A movement formed and led by the community.

The South African Mass Movement (SAMMO) was founded in February 2024. It is owned, designed and guided by the very people it represents – rooted in Ubuntu, shared values and collective responsibility.

About Us

SAMMO is a physical manifestation of our cultural value of Ubuntu – a movement where the community leads, and leaders are accountable to the people.

SAMMO – South African Mass Movement – was formed in February 2024 and is led by the people it serves. The community shapes the design and culture of the political party. When politicians move away from this framework, the community has the power to say: “This is not the nation we are building.”

We believe that the community is the true source of political power. We are responsible for the people we elect into political positions, and we hold them to the values that the movement stands for.

SAMMO is an expression of our African values of Ubuntu – interdependence, dignity and mutual care – carried across generations.

What SAMMO stands for

Key aspects that define SAMMO as a community-built African movement.

Ownership and Identity

Community members feel a strong sense of ownership because they are the driving force behind SAMMO’s creation. This is not a party handed down from above – it is a home we built for ourselves.

Grassroots Origin

SAMMO follows a bottom-up approach. The initiative did not come from distant politicians; it grew from community meetings, lived struggles and shared dreams.

Shared Purpose

The movement is built on mutual support, shared values and trust. This creates social cohesion and a strong sense of belonging.

Representation

SAMMO exists to genuinely represent the community’s voice – not just at election time, but every day. The needs, goals and realities of the people are understood from the inside, because the people themselves shaped the movement.

Accountability to the People

The community controls the political culture of SAMMO. If leaders deviate from the agreed principles, the people can correct the direction. Leadership is service, not careerism.

Ubuntu in Practice

Our politics is guided by Ubuntu – “I am because we are.” Decisions are made with respect for dignity, interconnection and justice.

Our Stories

“If this is our community, where are our stories?” – this question sits at the heart of SAMMO. We reclaim our voice through the stories we tell about ourselves.

Stories create belonging

Stories give meaning to place, politics and identity. They define who we are and what a “political party” really is. For us, a party is a home where people gather to shape their future together.

Challenging the old narrative

For too long, politicians have told a story of despair about our communities. We are only called when votes are needed. They do not know who we are, yet they claim to represent us. SAMMO challenges this narrative with our own voice.

Stories as identity

Personal, familial, cultural and political stories transmit knowledge, values and history. They shape our sense of self and our relationship with the world around us.

Community as storyteller

In our African understanding, a community is not just a random group of people – it is a living entity. Its stories are held in the people and the land, passed from generation to generation and connecting us to our ancestors.

Stories connect and separate

The stories we tell can unite us, but they can also create distance between communities and the politicians who claim power over them. Understanding this tension helps us build a healthier political culture.

Answering the question

When we ask, “Where are our stories?” we are really asking for the narrative that gives political value and meaning to the community. SAMMO is that narrative – a movement that turns our stories into organised, principled power.
